what makes metal jewlery smell and how do I get rid of it?

Mar 24 2010

Have you noticed how some old silver or metal jewlery gets a strong old metalic smell to it? What can I do to get that smell out of some of my necklaces etc, with damaging them? An is there anyting I can do to prevent it happening again. It seems to be pieces that I have not worn for a while.
Thanks for the answers so far.
I have noticed it a few times before on the piece, but the this particular item was expensive and has fabric twisted and incorparated in the design. But its the metal not the fabric smelling. I can tell coz its very a metalic smell – yes, somewhat similar to the smell of old coins. I have only worn this item once and have had it 4 years. I think the metal might be bronze.
Probably not bronze – I think its brass. Its that sort of colour.

  1. oils from people’s hands and dirty stuff make jewelry and coins smell…..just clean it thoroughly or never touch or go near it :P

When metal gets wet it creates a smell. So when its on your body your sweat and oils make it stink. You can’t get rid of the smell.

It sounds like they are oxidizing which means like rusting. You should never get this with gold because it is the only metal we have that will not oxidize. Platinum is very good but will go after a while, silver does it very quick and turns black and does tend to smell. If you go to your nearest jewellers you can but cleaning material for silver and it brings back the shin and stops the smell. Saying that I have worn silver and gold for years and never removed them and even bathe with them on, they have never come to any harm. Anything less valuable than the metals I mentioned I would just through in the trash.
