What kind of sunglasses do pilots use?

May 30 2009

I was looking for sunglasses and I wanted to know what brand sunglasses pilots use? The reason I ask is because they would most likely use the best stuff since they are always in the sky. Ii just saw Top Gun on tv and was wondering what sunglasses they wore in it.
The reason I asked was because I thought that they would need something to protect their eyes with as their job depends on the health of their eyes. I thought pilots would know what is good.

  1. The cheapest possible, because I always leave them on the darn plane

  2. There aren’t really any sunglasses specifically made for Pilots. We use the same glasses folks on the roadways use. Ray-Ban is popular, as are Serengeti. I like glass lenses better because plastic scratches too easily.

  3. Every individual pilot has his own preference. Though the ones with the small frames are more popular as they help keep the seal between youre ears and youre head set.

  4. You want the sunglasses to have a thin frame so the headset won’t drive them into your skull.
You may also prefer amber lenses, since they make seeing in haze easier and define clouds better.
If your plane has glass displays, polarized glasses are not for you since you will get black bands and weird images when moving your head.

  5. i use ray ban or if i happen to leave them on the plane i will go get a pair of military sunglasses as they are great and fairly inexpensive

  6. aviators, or how ever you spell it
dont listen to charles he wrong

  7. I don’t think anyone understood the question. The kind of glasses worn in Top Gun, by Maverik, are Mirrored Aviators.

However REAL Air Force pilots have NO preference for sun glasses, most don’t wear them at all. (And I’m fairly sure they are strictly forbiden to wear them durring flight regardless of rank, except for medical purposes after they get their wings)

And civilian pilots can wear any kind of glasses that feel comfortable for them, it really does not matter too much.
    I think these:
are what you are looking for. And supposedly the sterotype for pilots.

I am in the United States air force. And We use sunglasses called Aviators. And you can buy them any any local army surplus store for around $30 or so dollars.

Whatever glasses you are comfortable with…Now, the “paddle” glasses are designed to be worn with headsets to disperse the pressure points. You learn, that after sitting on expensive glasses, more reasonable priced ones are just as good!

This reminds me of the “pilots” watches…Ha! they look nice…scream “look, I want to be noticed” but they are absolutely useless.

Flying goggles and leather helmets with flaps.

  11. they use the ones that cut glare from the sun down..

  12. Randolph makes the government issue sunglasses used by military pilots and Ray Bans have been popular since WW-II. Both companies’ products are excellent but tend to run a bit more expensive than most.

One caveat if you are a pilot — avoid Polarized lenses! The polarization often gets crosswise with the natural interference patterns in the plastic instrument covers resulting in blacking out the instrument making it unreadable.

Check out a good pilot supply catalog like Sporty’s to get a line on the popular and practical styles.

  13. I am surprised people are so dumb. Airline pilots use whatever they like. No standard, what ever looks good on you. but most important you can choose expenive once or not. If you actualy want to see the instrument panel the glasses should be polarized. MEANING NO GLARE that is what you need. Forget spending 400 on aviatiors. unless you want to just make sure they are polorized.

  14. The original Aviator glasses are made by Ray-Ban.

  15. Just ordinary ones
