I was tired after going swimming (I came home late) and I promptly forgot about my bathing suit and towel. Now I’ve just found them and my towel was all black covered in mold. It was too far gone, but my bathing suit, after one wash, looks okay, but still smells of mold. How can More >

It is to create drag, so that when they only wear one it might make a little difference, probaly not much though

Either because some swim suits tend to become more “see through” or ripped/torn as they are worn in due the chlorine…
-or-
Because 2 suits tend to offer more support so you don’t feel as if you’re “hanging out” all over the place.
-or-
Create drag so practice becomes a bit more difficult
Just my experience w/ 2 suits

its probably because the one under wasa probably ripped or torn so they put another one over it

Most of the time swimmers do that to create drag, or more resistance in the water while they train. That way when they take the drag off to race, they’ve been used to more resistance and thus they swim faster because they can move more easily through the water. Or their suits just became a little baggy/see-through, so they had to double-up, and the drag was not really on purpose.

we wear 2 suits because on may be worn out or ripped, yes. they wear out quickly if one is always in the water. . It does not create drag, as many people think it does, or very little. But also we wear them because one might cover more in one spot and the other might cover more in another spot. other reasons i do not know about, but these are my team reasons

It creates more drag, which makes the muscles work harder while swimming, making the person using two suits stronger. If you look closely, you will probably see the second suit have many tears and knots in it, it is for this reason that they are called “drag suits”

like everyone has already said, for drag. if you practice with a drag suit (one that is worn out and not as tight) it will make it easier to swim in the meet with your tight, new suit.

This is because some people who swim competively or on a team choose to wear two suits at a time to create “drag”. It makes it a bit more difficult to be swift when swimming, and the body gets used to having to work harder to do it. When going back to wearing just one 1 piece suit, it supposedly causes you to go faster cause you are so used to carrying more weight when doing it during practice. The second 1 piece suit is commonly an old raggedy one, worn over one that is tighter and in better shape.

I think some female swimmers who swim outdoors tend to do that to even out the tanned lines as well?

They have two suits on because they want to produce more drag. so that when they are practicing they get used to swimming really fast with all the drag and then go to a meet without it they swim even faster. you might also notice some of the girls by personal preference do not shave their legs it for the same reason except they only shave for extremly big meets so they will get used to the drag even more while they are at meets too. not just at practice.

its like swinging two bats in the on deck circle. when you get ready to swim you take one off and feel like a wild man

Our swim team does this during practice to keep our bodies sleeker and more compact when we swim. For example, you have been in swimming for 3 yrs. and you haven’t got your new suit yet. You wear both of the suits because they are loose and not as tight as one.

its for drag. drag makes you work harder, and still go slower, so that when you are competing, and you only wear one suit, it makes you feel alot faster, and you really do go faster.

The reason why people wear two swim suits is that the top on is lose and it helps create drag. The drag slows you down which in turn makes you gain more muscles. Then when you get into a meet you just wear the one suit and its supposed to help you lose time. Its not going to help you lose a lot of time but maybe a few tenths of a second which can be a lot in swimming.

It is for drag, so it is working their arms more,so when at meets (and you dont wear two suits) you can pull yourself easier.
