Although sunglasses, or at least glasses with dark lenses, had been around since the Victorian era it wasn’t until 1937 when Ray Ban Sunglasses developed the Aviator sunglasses that they began being worn as a fashion accessory. Their history is interesting, Designed as practical equipment for pilots they cover the whole of the eye socket meaning that sunlight and glare from the peripheries of the wearers field of vision rather than directly where the wearer is looking. Because Hollywood actors had to fly around a lot thanks to their shooting schedules and promotional tours taking them all over America they noted the practicality of the glasses and that it would help them on set where arc lights that were required for shooting when there wasn’t enough natural light. The glasses then started to appear in movie magazines as the stars were shot on and off set wearing them. The mystique of the stylish design that covered nearly half of the face and endorsed by the stars during a time when celebrity still meant that the star was a folk hero who engendered legends made them immediately cool.

Since then Ray Ban sunglasses have never gone out of fashion and can be seen in all seasons. The Aviator style glasses were followed with the Ray Ban Wayfarer, a design of eyewear that is as copied as the Aviator style always has been. However, while the Wayfarer comes in and out of style it is prone to the vagaries of fashion while the ubiquitous Aviator is a design that might change its size and vary in its construction but has never gone out of style since its inception.

This shows that if an product, designed for utility and to meet a specific need does its job, works well and has simple lines which do their job without being flashy then they will become style icons. Like jeans they can be adjusted, tricked out or embellished yet Levi Strauss would still recognise an ordinary pair of his Denim trousers just as Ray Ban would recognise his glasses.

can you get different sized frames for ray ban sunglasses, i.e do they come in different sizes? like small medium large. I tried some clubmasters on in my local shop and they were far to small for my face, however i like the style and would therefore need a bigger sized one.I dont want to know where i can get raybans, i just want to know if i can get different sized frames!
