Their history is interesting, Designed as practical equipment for pilots they cover the whole of the eye socket meaning that sunlight and glare from the peripheries of the wearers field of vision rather than directly where the wearer is looking. Because Hollywood actors had to fly around a lot thanks to their shooting schedules and promotional tours taking them all over America they noted the practicality of the glasses and that it would help them on set where arc lights that were required for shooting when there wasn’t enough natural light. The glasses then started to appear in movie magazines as the stars were shot on and off set wearing them. The mystique of the stylish design that covered nearly half of the face and endorsed by the stars during a time when celebrity still meant that the star was a folk hero who engendered legends made them immediately cool.
