My 26 year-old boyfriend has been wearing shoes without support since he graduated high school. His feet are now practically flat. He has no pain when he wears his no-support boat shoes, though his feet get sore pretty easily. He is also about 25-pounds overweight, so I am trying to get him to go running with me. We spent an hour in the shoe store and got him the best running shoe possible for his flat feet. However, when we run, he can stand about 5 minutes of it before his feet and/or calves cramp up, and shooting pains radiate on the outsides of his feet, then his feet will hurt the rest of the night and he won’t be able to walk. At first I thought maybe his feet just need to adjust to being supported and get used to the shoe, but it’s not getting any better. We’re going to see a doctor as soon as we get some money (darn economy!), but in the meantime, is it okay for him to run in flat shoes (he has Keen sandals that don’t hurt him too much), or will that worsen the problem?
