Have you ever noticed how clothing fashion today means that just about anything goes?

Here’s a little suggestion; when you are next in town on a shopping trip treat yourself to a nice coffee at your favourite coffee house and do a little ‘fashion watching’. Take a look at all the trendy people in your local town or city center and mentally catalogue the clothes they are wearing according the era they are from, 1960s, 1970s etc.

It looks like almost anything goes these days. You’ll see many people wearing skin tight drainpipe jeans that were very fashionable during the 1960s. These may be matched with a pair of trendy, modern sports trainers. And on the top they may be wearing anything from a leather biker jacket to a Hawaiin shirt.

We are lucky to be living at a time when fashion are varied, interesting and sometimes a little bit odd. I saw ony young girl wearing a pair of ripped dungarees, a huge pair of hobnail boots and a beautiful floral blouse.

This eclecticism is particularly apparent when you look at the jeans people are wearing. You will see everything from skin tight 1960s style drainpipes through to super baggy skater pants or slouchy Fat Face Jeans.

But there are some fashions which I hope we’ll never see again. Do you remember 1980s shoulder pads? Jackets became increasingly wide and hair became increasingly big throughout the 1980s. And who can remember ski pants or leggings as some call them? These were first worn under another garment such as a pair of shorts or a skirt but they were soon being worn on their own.

I’ve been writing this post while sitting in a cafe observing the various fashions as they pass by and I just saw a middle aged man in a pair of skin tight ski pants. It just goes to show that many fashions tend to return, regardless of how bad they once were. So I’m now planning to grow my hair into a mullet and I’m on the lookout for some 1980s style stonewashed denim jeans and a matching jacket and shirt.

During the 1980s everything became bigger, especially hair and shoulder pads. And what about leggings or what some people call ski pants? These were originally worn under another garment like a skirt or a pair of shorts but it soon became fashionable, in the 1980s, to wear them on their own.

Just as I wrote the last line (sat here at a caf© with my laptop) I looked up and say a young woman walking down the road wearing a pair of leggings. It just goes to prove my point that fashions tend to return no matter how awful they may have been.
