Fashion has certainly changed with the times, but the basic principles of color coordination have not. Although combining colors that complement each other is more of a science than an art, you definitely don’t have to put much thought into this subject. No matter what situation you find yourself in whether it be a romantic evening at a fine restaurant or just a casual lunch with a friend it says a lot about your personality if you take a few extra moments to pick out articles that look good together.
The Basic Colors: White, Gray, and Black – These three colors are neutral and can look attractive with any color especially white. They make a great base to build your wardrobe upon, such as choosing a white dress shirt that is complimented by a colorful tie. They are also very refined, dignified colors that would suit any occasion perfectly. If you’re not sure what to wear to an event or function, then you can certainly not go wrong by choosing one of these three colors for your wardrobe.
Choose Complimentary Colors – The art of color coordination is actually not even an art at all its a science. With this in mind, there is a certain set of guidelines to follow when considering what colors to pull into your wardrobe. Whether you’re choosing colors to decorate your living room or picking out shades for your clothes, certain colors tend to go with others no matter what situation you find yourself in. The most common color pairs are: Orange and Blue, Yellow and Purple, Red and Green. In addition to these three common pairs, there are more specific colors that complement one another. What you need you consult is the universal color wheel, which can either be purchased inexpensively at your local art store or found on an internet image search. This circular diagram places complimentary colors directly opposite of one another, making it clear and simple to determine what colors look good together.
Choose Colors of the Same Value – When combining colors in your wardrobe, you should not only choose complimentary colors, but colors of the same value. By value, we mean the relative strength of each color. For example, a bright neon orange has a much higher value than a muted, pastel orange. Although you may be choosing complimentary colors when picking out what to wear, they may not always appear to be that way if they vary greatly in color value. So in short, neons should be worn with neons just as pastels should be worn with other pastels.
Avoid Colorful Pants – Colored pants rarely look right on men, so stick to neutral colors such as white, grey, black, and shades of beige. This also allows one article of clothing to be of a pleasing neutral color which will help balance your entire outfit. For example, if you wore blue pants with an orange shirt, people who look at you will have no place to rest their eyes on and it will look more confusing than fashionable.
The art of coordinating a look that is both colorful and complimentary is more of a science in reality. The list of complimentary colors has been universally accepted as true and applies to much more than what you wear. By referring to the content in this article, you’ll be sure to create a bold, new look for yourself that will have everyone wondering if you hired a professional designer to infiltrate your closet.
