How to get prescription sunglasses using brand name frames?

Jan 22 2010

I saw these D&G sunglasses I wanted to get (if i can save up enough money for it). I really need a new pair of sunglasses, because my eyes are sensitive to sunlight and it will be difficult when I start driving, especially during sunset.

But my eyes are super sensitive and I can’t wear contacts, so I always need frames. Is it possible to get my exact eye prescription in shade lenses for a brand name sunglasses frame that already has lense in it? Or do I just tell them I like this certain frame and I need UV protection lens for it.

  1. most eyeglasses places will do prescription sunglasses with any frame that is well made and can support a custom lense, which is basically any brand name frame should do. A common eyeglass place may even have the frame you like, or a catalog where they can order it. If not, you can buy them at one store and get prescription lenses at another, make sure you can take the frames back just in case, because they can’t do it will all frames, but they most likely will be able too. good luck.

  2. I had a great pair of Tom Ford sunglasses made into prescription sunglasses. I’ve also had a pair of Kate Spade sunglasses remade to replace their gradient tint with a polarized lens.

This usually isn’t a problem with quality frames. Sometimes, though, when there is a lot of wrap to the frame special measurements and calculations need to be made to make sure you see properly through the lenses and not every office is able to do this. Some styles also make it difficult or impossible to cut prescription lenses.

Take a photo of the frames you like and a copy of your prescription to an optician and ask his/her opinion. They may already have the frame for sale or be able to help you find something similar that is suitable for your prescription.

  3. There are many different things that come into play. First do you have a high minus or high plus RX? Does the frame have a lot of curve to it? My suggestion is to take the frame to an optical center with your RX and see if they can do it. Or if they have an alternative lab that could help. Good Luck.
