Tan
Cause and effect
Tanning Bed
Tanning is a natural process where the skin creates the brown pigment called melanin, to protect against harmful rays of the sun, full sun, but also works with artificial UV rays. There are two different mechanisms involved.
First, UVA radiation generates oxidative stress, which in turn oxidizes the melanin already exists. This leads to darkening the existing rapid melanin. Secondly, there is increased production of melanin (Melanogenesis). It is a reaction body UVB sun damage. Melanogenesis leads to delayed tanning. He becomes the first visible about 72 hours after exposure. Tan that is created by increased melanogenesis lasts much longer than that caused by the oxidation of existing melanin.
The darkening of the skin is caused by an increase the release of the pigment melanin in skin cells after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes and protects the body against DNA damage directly and indirectly absorb excessive solar radiation, which can be harmful. Depending on a person’s genetic profile, some people can darken quickly and deeply whereas others do not darken much at all.
The ultraviolet frequencies responsible for tanning often divided into UVA and UVB range.
UVB
UV-B is in the wavelength range 280 to 320 nm.
cause the formation of DNA damage-CPD (injury direct DNA), which in turn induces an increased production of melanin
is more likely to cause a sunburn than UVA as a result of overexposure. The mechanism of sunburn and increased melanogenesis is identical. Both are caused by direct DNA damage (formation of CPD)
Reduced by almost all solar screens according to their SPF
Is believed to cause the formation of moles and some types of skin cancer
causes of skin aging (but at rates far slower than UVA.)

UVA
Ultraviolet radiation in the wavelength range of 320-400 nm. It is now more uniform throughout the day and seasons of UVB. UVA causes release of preexisting melanin from melanocytes combine with oxygen (oxidation), which in turn creates the color as real in the skin. UVA seems to cause less cancer than UVB, but causes melanoma, a more dangerous type of skin cancer than other types. It is blocked at least several UVB sunscreens but is blocked to some degree by clothing. When tanning in a tanning bed, which occurs mainly UVA is deeper tan the skin and a duration which keeps the tanner the desired color with fewer visits.
Cultural History

Throughout history, tanning has seen many changes in popularity. In the early civilizations with a class, differences social disparities between the hardened and others. This system of separate classes often those who are supposed to be luxury and those who were not. This distinction is reflected in the color of the skin. Those who often spend long hours in the sun are often grouped into a lower class. Women have even put lead based cosmetics on your skin to artificially increase appearance. However, these cosmetics slow death due to lead poisoning. To achieve this in light skin has been caused in many other ways, including the use of arsenic skin whitening, to more modern methods such as full length clothing, powder and parasols. This trend continued until the final skin of the Victorian era. Niels Finsen received the Nobel Prize in 1903 for its lack of sensitivity to light therapy. This therapy was to cure infectious diseases such as lupus vulgaris and rickets. Vitamin D proved to be a cause of disease rickets, and exposure to sunlight the vitamin D that occurs in a person. Therefore, sun exposure is a cure for many diseases, including rickets. Shortly afterwards, in the 1920s, Coco Chanel accidentally received a sunburn during your visit to the Riviera. His fans to Apparently, he liked the look and began to adopt darker skin tones themselves. A tanned skin became a trend in part because of the situation Coco and the desire of their way of life for other members of society. In addition, Parisians fell in love with Josephine Baker, singer skin aramel in Paris. Those who have loved and idolized wanted darker skin so they can be more like her. Both trends were two French women in the processing of tanned leather to be considered like fashion, health and more luxurious.
In the 1940s, women’s magazines have begun to use advertising that encourages sun. At that time, the coverage the skin began to decline swimsuit and tanning oil is released. The bikini made its debut in 1946. Louis Reard was the French designer who introduced the bikini. In the 1950s, a growing trend has been to use baby oil as a method to tan faster. The first self-tanner is born In the same decade, and was known as Tan, and often leads to unwanted orange peel. Coppertone in 1953, taught the girl and pulling her blond cocker bottom swimsuit on the cover of their sunscreen products, which is always the same ad now used in their bottles of sunscreen. In the latter part of 1950, Silver metallic UV reflectors are common to enhance tanning. In 1971, Mattel introduced Barbie Malibu, which has tanned skin, sunglasses, sun cream and a bottle clean. In the same decade, in particular in 1978, led to the use of sunbeds and sunscreen with an SPF 15. Today there are about 50,000 retail outlets for the suntan while in 1990 there were only about 10,000. The tanning business is an industry that moves five billion. In other regions of the world, clear skin is still the standard of beauty. The geisha of Japan were known for their bright faces painted white, and the attractiveness of bihaku (?), Or “beautiful white, ideal led many women Japanese to avoid any form of tanning. There are exceptions to this, of course, with the Japanese fashion trends, to emphasize ganguro almost black skin. The white color is associated with purity and divinity in many Eastern religions. In India, dark skin is strongly associated with a lower-class status, and some people resort to bleaching the skin for a skin color as socially acceptable.
Sociologically
According to several studies, men and women consider a body most experienced a healthy body pale, though the sun sometimes leads to a sick body through the burned skin blisters, wrinkles and skin cancer. This represents a conflict between health and social values that is perceived as healthy or physically attractive. Some people prefer to be present in healthy and meet the expectations of society, instead of limiting the risk by avoiding sun damage. The image transmitted by a so largely responsible for the growing trend of tanning today.
Tanning dispute
More recently, some researchers have suggested that tanning in moderation can be healthier than commonly believed. Edward Giovannucci, professor of medicine and nutrition at Harvard state, according to his research, people have enough vitamin D from exposure to UV rays, the contribution of others can prevent 30 deaths each one caused by skin cancer. His research also suggests that diet is very little vitamin D-3 needed to stop cancer. Michael Holick, professor of dermatology at Boston, said that moderate exposure to sunlight may reduce the risk of many forms of cancer, diabetes, seasonal affective disorder, and other diseases. These researchers are vigorously opposed to most dermatologists, for example, Dr. Elewski, President of the American Academy of Dermatology, argued that the reports of sun exposure can be dangerous and that people can obtain all the vitamins you need through supplements D. Large trials have shown that vitamin D produced by both sun exposure and dietary supplements in significantly reducing the risk of cancer, and help cure cancer. Show vitamin D for more details.
Dressing for tanning
To maximize coverage of beige, some people minimize the amount of clothes they wear while tanning. By the standards of local communities and individual choice, some people tan without clothing, while other topless tanning, and others are very brief bathing suit, as microkini. Some people in the privacy of your backyard solar, which sometimes take what they want, and some countries have set aside for clothing-optional beaches (also known as naturist, nude or nudist beach), where people can sunbathe nude or topless beach.

Skin protection by using a umbrella
Excessive exposure to direct sunlight is considered potentially harmful to the health of a person. To avoid sunburn, one person must remain out of the sun for long periods of time. In case of prolonged exposure to sunlight can not be avoided or want, you can coat or use a sunscreen or prescription various creams to reduce the risks of UVA and UVB exposure. The SPF (Sun Protection Factor) on a number of sunscreen products shows its efficiency ratio. Products with SPF number provide better protection against ultraviolet radiation. However, in 1998, the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement Science reported that some sunscreens UVA and UVB advertising does not guarantee adequate safety against UVA radiation and could give a false sense Tanners Sun protection.
For those who choose to tan, some dermatologists recommend the following preventive measures:
Ensure protection blocks solar UVA and UVB. This type of sunscreen called the solar spectrum contains more active ingredients. Ideally, sunscreen should also be hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic so as not to cause a rash or clog the pores, which can cause acne.
Sunscreen should be applied fairly thick to make a difference. Often, people do not put enough sunscreen to get the full SPF protection. Where there is uncertainty on the quantity of product to use, or uncomfortable with the amount asked, switching to a sunscreen with an SPF higher can help.
Research has shown that the best protection is achieved by applying 15 to 30 minutes before exposure, followed by a new application after 15 to 30 minutes sun exposure begins. more reapplication is necessary after activities such as swimming, sweating and friction.
The sun’s rays are strongest between 10 am and 16 hours rest in the shade as often recommended during those hours. Solar radiation is stronger at high altitudes (mountains) and low latitudes (near Ecuador). One way to deal with time zones, daylight saving (DST) and the latitude is check the length of shade. If a person’s shadow is shorter than its actual size in the standing position the risk of sunburn is much higher.
Use a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection, which can provide almost 100% protection against ultraviolet radiation on the eyes.
Please aware that reflective surfaces like snow and water can increase the amount of UV radiation to which the skin is exposed.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends the use of sunscreen, protective clothing against the sun and avoid the sun altogether.
Recent data indicate that sodium benzoate, caffeine increased apoptosis and caffeine UVB induced both topical and oral applications. In mice, UVB-induced hyperplasia was significantly reduced with the administration of these substances. Although studies in humans have not yet met, sodium benzoate and caffeine caffeine may be novel inhibitors of skin cancer.
Tanning and Protection the sun
In his book guide to sunscreens Dr. Nicholas J. Lowe said that one reason for customers to reject the use of sun protection is the reduction Tanning is associated with a good sunscreen. (Chapter 7 page 81) then reports on several tanning activators. Specific matters is written about the different forms of psoralen. These substances have been known to be photocarcinogenic since 1979. Despite the obvious effects photocarcinogenic authorities psoralen refused to July 1996.
